We bought this fan over 2 years ago when we first moved into our two story home. We needed a fan for upstairs to help blow in fresh air in the cooler months and suck out the hot air in the warmer months. It did just that! We had continuously used this fan for 2 years straight…day and night (only turning off once in a while for inclement weather) before the fan died! You can beat it lasting 2 straight years of continual use…day after day!
The fans are great when you are painting a room in your house, or doing other repairs that require ventilation. They help to suck out the dust, paint fumes, or funky odors. They are easy to store (We have the dead one tucked away in case we can figure out how to repair it.).
We found they did best upstairs, where we have no central air, to suck out the hot air all day. By the time you go to bed, one fan on one end of house, has sucked out the hot air and brought in the cool air at night…making it virtually unneeded to have a window unit.
I was so sad when it died. I bought 2 similar style fans…but you have to manually take the fans out and turn them around to use the exhaust feature. That is a real pain. I am so glad to have found these fans again. I can’t wait to order more!

Initially I was hesitant to get the fan because of the negative reviews. But I tried it out anyways, and really really like it. I’m going to buy a second one for another room.

What I like:

1. CIRCULATES AIR WELL: the room I’m using this fan in is nice and cool even only after turning on the fan for a few minutes. (I was actually shocked that this was a drastic contrast to another room next door that has 2 floor/standing fans – the other room doesn’t feel nearly as cool).

2. QUIET: there is a very very faint hum from the fan motor(soothing, not rattling & not annoying), which is actually quieter than any other fan I’ve every used. Anyone who thinks a fan will be completely outer space quiet is unrealistic.

3. AUTO ON/OFF: The fan allows you to select always On or Only if room’s temperature is above the temp you set. There are 3 levels of blowing power.

4. SIDE FLAPS: They are easy to assemble if you want to use it to block out outsiders from seeing inside your house.

5. GREAT DEAL: very economical price.

In summary, this is a great fan, I like it so much that I am buying another one for another room. Also, I have friends that also have this same model and they like theirs too.

This is a very good window fan. It is compact, quiet and moves a lot of air. The selections to either use the fan as an exhaust or intake plus the ability to adjust it to operate on a themostat or timer level is also a great plus.

We live in the Boston area, still summers can get hot. We would also like to save money and be easy on the planet so minimizing AC use is an important goal.

Stand fans give a big blast of air, but even positioned near the window our room temperature stayed a good 10 degrees above the outside temperature. The window fan, while less forceful than a stand fan, got the room to within 5 degrees of outside temperature. When the difference is 75 vs 80, that is the difference between needing AC or not. I monitor inside/outside temps with a series of Oregon Scientific weather stations and sensors.

The window fan has cut our AC usage at night about in half, a very worthwhile achievement.

Also, you can leave it installed and when the room heats up during the day it will turn on and cool it off. It also makes a good exhaust fan for our non-ventilated kitchen

Of course if it 80 degrees and humid out then we use the AC instead. These fans are easy to remove from the window in that situation.

My wife still likes a stand fan to “blow” air around, but the window fan does a much better job of moving air in. We tend to run one as intake and one as outtake on opposite sides of the house, we adjust in vs out based on the prevailing breeze.

This was my first window fan. It was soo great that i decided to go on amazon and get three more. Though i did not get this fan, i ended up getting the honeywell HW-628 fan, seeing all the good reviews about it. Well lets just say i was very disappointed. The honeywell barely have any technological advance to it. Cant control anything. It was weaker than this fan, and it doesn’t have sleep timer, which is a must with every electronic, when you are a lazy person.

This fan looks better and work better than the more popular honeywell, buy this and you wont regret it.

Living in a historic house where central A/C is beyond impossible we rely on the Holmes fans to make life livable. This 3rd generation product is pretty well a best of breed device. It incorporates all the best innovations of previous products including the “automatic” (thermostat) modes, easy to set controls, and readable display. Personally I thought the LCD display was a bit classier than the LED display but of course you can’t read LCD in the dark so that’s a win.

A prior model had a remote-control device, which would have been nice, but since it was a one-button remote and the fan only had 5-degree increments on its thermostat, that model was not very good. I would love a 3 button remote, that would have been great.

Reliability wise, you can expect about 3-5 summers out of them, less if you run them during the rain and the window is not well shielded from the elements.

The most-wished for improvement would be a way for the thermostat to control fan direction (in or out) which you currently have to manually change if you are changing from nighttime (fan in) to daytime (fan out) use.

When I needed a second window fan, I went looking for another Honeywell model HW-628, like the first one I had purchased, because it was highly rated here. Unfortunately, that model was no longer available, so I had to try something else. I’m glad I did. The Holmes HAWF3095-U that I ended up with is better.

1) The expanding panels on the Holmes are easier to use than the Honeywell, because they aren’t the same on both sides. The left side is an optional solid panel (use for wider windows, leave out for narrower windows) and the right side is a slide out panel that can be adjusted to a variable size. This turns out to be easier to install — while one is fine tuning the position of the right panel, the solid left side doesn’t move around.

2) The temperature read out is nice to have, and lets you better use the thermostatically controlled automatic on/off option.

3) The side of the fan toward the window screen is thinner on the Holmes, so doesn’t bump against my outside window screen or push it out of place.

4) The control buttons are a bit nicer, bigger, better feeling on the Holmes. I now have two fans, one on each side of my upstairs apartment, in Texas where it can get pretty warm. One fan (my old Honeywell) is blowing in, and the other fan (my new Holmes) is blowing out. This creates a nice air flow, through the entire apartment.

For those few days when it gets below freezing, I have hand crafted a pair of covers, using velcro, hot stick glue gun, and a hand towel, which I can put over the fan openings to keep out the draft. That’s quite a bit easier than taking the fans in and out would be.

So far, I have seen no signs of reliability problems with either fan, though given that I have a green thumb for electrical gadgets, I didn’t expect any problem.

Holmes Window Fan w/ Accutemp Plus, HAWF3095-U

Buy this fan if you want something unobtrusive that will easily fit in a window, and if you like the “Acu-Temp” feature. If you live in a climate where you sometimes want a little extra cooling but don’t really need AC, its ideal, especially if space is at a premium.

It puts out a good solid breeze and its nice and quiet. It is still a fan of course so I won’t say its silent. Another reviewer complained about airflow, and I will say its not a heavy duty blast like you get from a big fan… but… its not a big fan, is it. High on this fan is more like medium on a big heavy fan. I like a cool bedroom and this fan has plenty of air for me. In fact I only use 3 (high) to cool the room down intially, then sleep using 1 or 2 (low, med) except on the hottest days. We have a another honkin’ big fan we can move wherever we need it for the rest of the house. We love this quiet more gentle fan in our bedroom.

We replaced our old “Cool-Breeze” window fan with this one, and first off I was thrilled at how much easier it was to securely install it into the window. It is a really good design. If you choose to use them, the baffles on the sides allow the fan to fit across the whole width of the window. It was an unweildy job when I installed the old fan, but with this one it only took a minute to get it in and I didn’t swear at all. The fan is nice and sleek so it easily fit into the window without interfering with the screen.

Using the “Acutemp” thermostat feature, you don’t have to get up and turn off the fan and/or get a blanket in the middle of the night (the old one was so loud it kept me up so I was awake anyway). You choose your airflow level and temperature at which you want the fan to turn off, so you go to bed when its still warm and you want that fan, but then it eventually cools down (at least here in the Pacific Northwest it does, thank the goddess) and the fan turns off. Likewise, you can set it to turn on when it gets above a certain temp in the room.

Of course you can also just turn the fan on to low med or high (1, 2, or 3) without the automatic functionality.

The one thing that wasn’t apparent when I ordered it, is that the darker control panel area that appears gray in the picture is actually a grayish olive green. Its fairly neutral though, kind of a pleasant sage color. Not a problem for our bedroom but I suppose some people might not like it.
